The automatic colouring of computer interfaces is complicated. There are often many objects to be coloured, and because of human physiology, the apparent colour of an object is affected by the colours of objects nearby. This means that colours cannot be optimised individually, only in combination. Worse still, colour scheme appeal is subjective. Therefore, it is impossible to produce colour schemes that are guaranteed to be pleasing.

This seminar will outline the “Colour Harmoniser” - an approach and prototype system that is able to satisfy the two apparently conflicting goals of automatic design and subjective appeal.  Using colour harmony heuristics from the art community, the Harmoniser generates many harmonious palettes for a given interface. Each palette associates a colour with every item in the interface, and often includes the lower saturation "nameless" colours used primarily by professional designers, rarely by beginners.

The importance of this work is that it allows the exploration of a new mode of user interaction – the real-time exploration of interface colour schemes with support for widely used “artistic colour scheme wireframes”, rather than the approach commonly used by beginners of changing one colour at a time with no concern or support for the overall aesthetics.
